Nebraska’s recent weather outbreaks have produced strong winds, large hail, and heavy rains, leaving countless Nebraskans with damage to their homes and property.

“Knowing what to do after severe weather hits can help keep your family and property safe,” stated Director of Insurance, Bruce Ramge. State and federal laws require that group health plans and health insurance issuers provide insureds and beneficiaries with certain documents when an event occurs or upon individual request.1 For some material, federal law expressly allows electronic delivery. To the extent there is no state or federal law or rule that addresses electronic delivery of documents, the Department will allow insurers to provide material to insureds and beneficiaries electronically, including policies, certificates of coverage, evidence of coverage, renewal information, explanations of benefits, billing invoices, summaries of benefits and coverage, coordination of benefits forms, and claim or appeal related materials, only if the following conditions are met:

On February 29, 2016, the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) issued guidance that allows the states the option to extend transitional policies for individual and small group health insurance plans to policy years beginning on or before October 1, 2017 provided that all policies end by December 31, 2017.

NEWS RELEASE - Nebraska Insurance Regulator Receives Prestigious National Award

Nebraska Department of Insurance (NDOI) Deputy Director and General Counsel, Christine Neighbors, has been awarded the Robert Dineen Award for Outstanding Service and Contribution to the State Regulation of Insurance. Neighbors received the award at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (“NAIC”) Fall National Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland on November 19, 2015. She was one of three regulators to receive the award this year, joining regulators from Tennessee and Texas.

“Christy is known nationally for her tremendous work with international insurance matters and has developed a great deal of respect for her work on the subject matter of insurance group supervision,” said NDOI Director Bruce Ramge. “Nebraska’s domestic insurance industry includes several large insurance groups. Christy’s work benefits Nebraskans and the U.S. insurance industry.”

The Nebraska Department of Insurance is finishing its statewide informational sessions on the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare. Beginning on Tuesday, November 3, the Department will be informing Nebraskans about changes to Obamacare in Norfolk, South Sioux City, and Fremont. Individuals are invited to attend these public meetings.
