Nebraska requires insurance professionals to hold an active license prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating any insurance business. Passing the state insurance exam is the first step in obtaining a Nebraska resident insurance license. The Nebraska Department of Insurance has contracted with PSI Services LLC (PSI) to conduct examination program. PSI works closely with the Department to ensure examinations meet the state- and nationally-established technical and professional standards for examination development and administration. PSI provides these examinations through a network of computer examination centers in Nebraska and throughout the US.
First-Time License Process for Nebraska Residents
- Applicants need to register and pass the insurance examination for the appropriate line of authority.
- After passing your exam, information is uploaded by PSI directly to the Department of Insurance. Please allow 2-3 days for the exam information to be uploaded to our system.
- Applicants must then go to NIPR.com and apply for the insurance license. You must apply and be issued a Nebraska insurance license in order to sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance in the state of Nebraska.
- Once the application is submitted, please allow 3-5 days for processing. You can go to NIPR.com to download or print a copy of your new license.

The Department of Insurance does not have pre-licensing study materials. You may use your chosen materials to study for the license exam. Many different providers offer exam prep courses, and because of the number and array of methods, the department does not review, approve, or recommend providers.
